1. Introduction
The current Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition was Department of Pedology, established at the same time as the Agriculture and Forestry Institute in 1956 (there were 3 groups: Pedology, Agro-chemistry, and Microorganism). Untill 1976, together with the establishment of the Agricultural Land Management Faculty (nowadays called Faculty of Land Management), the Department of Pedology was renamed to the Department of Pedology - Agrochemistry (including Microorganism group) . In 1978, the Department of Pedology and Agrochemistry was separated to two departments: Pedology - Agrochemistry and Soil Analysis. In 1980, the university combined Department of Pedology - Agrochemistry and Department of Soil analysis. The new department was still called the Department of Pedology - Agrochemistry. In 2003, the Department of Pedology- Agrochemistry was separated to establish two new departments: Soil science and Agrochemistry - Microorganism. In January 2022, the Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition was established on the basis of reorganization of two ministries of Soil Science and Agrochemistry. Currently, the Department of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition is directly under the The Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment of VNUA.
2. Functions and tasks
Teaching: Currently, Department of Soil Science is responsible for teaching 31 subjects for undergraduate level, 11 subjects for higher education, 07 subjects for doctorate. The department is in charge of the management of the Soil sciences from the undergraduate to the doctoral level.
Scientific research and technology transfer: In recent years, the Department of Soil Science has been studying and transferring scientific and technical advances to the following main directions:
Study on soil classification under FAO - UNESCO - WRB; Study of soil fertility and soil fertility improvement measures; Research and assessment of land potential for land use planning in the direction of efficiency and sustainability;
Application of FAO land evaluation methodology in soil classification; Study of soil constraints and remedial measures, especially sloping land and problematic land; Research on the treatment of heavy metals in the soil by biological methods, in-depth study of some basic physico-chemical properties of soil, both teaching and supplementing the land database for other research purposes;
Research and develop effective and sustainable land use models on different ecological regions; Study on cultivation practices for CH4 Reduction in paddy rice in the Red River Delta.
