On November 11, 2021, the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment, Vietnam National University of Agriculture (VNUA), and Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology, University Malaysia Pahang organize the Webinar on Toxiecological effects of microplastic to aquatic organisms. This is a special session under Global classroom: Safety & Risk Management. The participants are lecturers, staff, and students of University Malaysia Pahang, Vietnam National Univesity of Agriculture, Scientist from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Dr. Vo Huu Cong from the Faculty of Natural Resources and Environment (FONRE) was invited as the keynote speaker for the Webinar.

The world plastic production was reported at 348 million metric tons of which 34.8 million metric tons of waste was generated in 2018. It is projected about 67.8 million metric tons of waste by 2050. Microplastic (<5mm) is generated by natural degradation of macroplastic in the environment. It was reported by V.H Cong and P.M Hen (2021) that microplastic has a strong binding capacity with heavy metals and organic contaminants due to its adsorption and hydrophobic properties. In the water bodies, microplastic is transported via floating, suspending in water, and settling in the sediment. The aquatic organisms that eat the contaminated microplastic by chance reveal alterations of immunological responses, changes in gene expression profile; growth and physiological status, anemia and perturbations leading to mortality, etc. The participants were interested to understand the research carried out by students of FONRE and raised several questions.

Under the COVID-19 situation, the lecturers have overcome the difficulties in joining the international conferences due to social distancing by actively participating in scientific exchange activities via Webinars. These activities would help lecturers and students to share and update the trend in environmental science.
